Three characters that impressed me in Act 1 of Othello are Cassio, Iago, and Othello. Othello is a warrior when it comes to war and a lover when it comes to Desdemona. Although he is highly respected by the people of Venice, including the Duke himself, he is very hated by Desdemona's father, Brabantio, for stealing Desdemona's heart. Brabantio even accuses Othello of using "witchcraft" to get the love of Desdemona. After taking this incident to the Duke, the Duke did nothing but say "let it go." Iago is the opposite of Othello. As noble as Othello appears to be, that is how evil Iago is even though he appears trustworthy and honest to other people. Dramatic irony is taking place because so far only the reader knows how conniving Iago really is. Cassio is the middle man. His sexy and flirty reputation might be a conflict for Othello because Iago is planning to start a rumor about how close Cassio and Desdemona are getting. Othello will probably believe this because he is a trusting and naïve man. In addition, Cassio is a ladies' man. This trio of characters could be a trio of tragedy.

I agree with your thoughts on Brabantio and how he hates Othello, Brabantio sees too full of himself and doesnt see Othello for anything more than his skin color. Brabantio should have been happy that his daughter found love instead of wishing she was never born
ReplyDeleteI also agree that barbantio was very rude and disrespectful in calling othello racist names but , in othellos defense, it was not very socially acceptable for blacks to marry whites. Barbantios hatred is somewhat justified in this manner. I belive that barbantio will take back what he said about othello and desdemona.
